Why is my Generation so Obsessed With Vampires?
Everywhere you turn it seems that there is something about vampires. I remember when the only fictional character that Gen-Y was obsessed with was Harry Potter. Now it seems that everyone is crazed about the Stephenie Meyer series, Twilight, or other vampire related things.
It isn’t just the infatuation that people have with the popular Twilight saga, but the extent to which they are obsessed. It started in 2005 with Twilight, but it’s moved to The Vampire Diaries, the House of Night series, and others. The Vampire Diaries is even becoming a TV series. The obsession with the books has moved to movies, TV series, and even role playing games.
The obsession Gen-Y has with vampires has gotten out of control. I was buying books for summer reading a few weeks ago and decided to look in the Teen’s section of the library for other books that I might like to read over the summer. I had to do a double take. I thought that I had walked into the vampire section of the library instead of the Teen’s section. There were vampire books staked from end to end.
What ever happened to the teenage obsessions with having last month’s clothing, or being in the geeky clique, or the cute guy/girl at school? Nope, now it seems that the obsession has moved to… vampires? I don’t quite understand why so many people can be obsessed with these fictional characters. I don’t think I’ll ever understand.
